On Monday, June 5, 2023, The Fort Wayne Public Art Commission dedicated the Pillars of Hope and Justice monument, a public art project commemorating the June 5, 1963, visit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Fort Wayne, during which he gave a speech sharing his vision for nonviolent resistance. Dr. King’s son, Martin Luther King III, spoke during the dedication ceremony and then again during a 60th Anniversary Celebration Program at the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center, the former Scottish Rite Auditorium where Dr. King gave his 1963 speech. The Rev. Bill McGill gave a recitation of Dr. King’s speech during the celebration program.
